![]() ![]() I agree that some mods/edits are just as harmless as UI-altering addons, but allowing access to that data would create problems for Blizzard and moderating “proper” use of mods would become a nightmare.įWIW, When I say “harmless”, I mean in terms of affecting gameplay. They don’t allow addons to access what they need to change armor textures or race models, so people doing that are creating mods, not addons. Really it just comes down to what data Blizzard has available to addon devs. So in this case, I would consider some of those mods that slightly alter appearance to be on the same level that addons alter the UI of the game. So basically, there are different levels as to how much a mod can alter a game. That is not that different from changing the appearance of the UI. For example, I remember that there was a mod that a friend of mine used way in the day that simply recolors an armor set. ![]() For example, just like your can change the look of windows, you can also change the appearance of your armor through mods. Mods can do whatever the hell they want, which is why it’s not allowed. Meanwhile, direct edits/mods to game files could do things like allow you to see through walls, make the flag in PvP 20x bigger so you always know the location, or allow players to race change for free.īasically, addons can’t access the data they need to do things Blizzard doesn’t want them to do by their nature – Blizzard doesn’t have to closely moderate it. If an addon isn’t doing something that could be figured out within the limitations of the base game, it’s probably something entirely vanity related, like TRP3/XRP allowing you to write text profiles for your characters, changing the look of windows and other UI elements, whatever. GTFO? It’s just another cue on top of the existing ones (health lowering, red flash at low hp)Įven something like ‘Routes’ is just mapping out something you normally do in your head while gathering herbs in an methodical manner. How are addons different? don’t they potentially give massive gameplay advantages?Īddons are typically cosmetic and display only things would could gather from the game ourself without the addon.ĭPS Meters? We can technically get that info from the combat log if we wanted.īoss Mods? Grab a stopwatch and start writing things down. I think addons will also have a far reaching impact on the coming classic server/client and they might want to make up their minds about what can and can not be altered before “we” do. As anyone can hopefully see, the gulf between someone playing with addons and someone without is almost a completely different game in reguards to both skill and atmosphere. I dont care if that means incorporating DMB or squashing it but id like the see the nebulous area that is addons/modding addressed and this recent banwave is as good of an impetus as any. I don’t really hold that against them, but I do think the time has come to state their intentions in an official capacity and police addons accordingly. ![]() Honestly I dont think blizzard even know what they intend per say, but instead are just being reactionary. Not that it matters but I’m just not sure I buy into an argument about intent without some stated goal for the game in this regard. You really think they intended for DBM(or whatever addon) to exist in its current form? If so, why wouldn’t it be part of WoW instead of something separate found on a third party site? Which I get, there are a few that I run that would make life on Azeroth suck WAY more without them.ĭoing anything in game that the developers do not intend.ĭoesn’t that seem at least a little arbitrary? I really think we have just become attached to addons and thus don’t want to catagorize them in the same way as something deemed against the TOS. Even then that is a stretch since unless I am wrong, blizzard does not put a seal of approval of any kind on any addons, they simply allow them to exist and function until they find out about one they don’t like. I really just don’t see a difference other than blizzard arbitrarily okays addons but not mods. If the fear is that mods will get “out of hand” somehow, isn’t the fact that blizzard have had to change their framework due to addons they dont like (groupquest finder more recently) proof that addons run exactly the same risk? If it has to do with unintended benefits(like turning nodes into fel reavers to seem them more easily) then surely DMB and healbot go against that? If its file alterations, then modding and addons are incredibly similar. I promise I am not trying to be obtuse here, but what is considered “exploiting” the game?
